Richard Graves was born in the Red River Valley, raised on the Glacial Ridge and lived and worked in the Minnesota River Valley, before moving to Roseville MN, where he does his watercoloring. He received a degree in Architecture at North Dakota State eons ago, and although buildings are an integral part of his art work, his subject matter is as varied as the great outdoors, one of his favorite subjects.
He says, "My latest work has a lot of shade and shadow that are very vibrant. I describe the shadows as a major part of the paintings. Like a narrator of a play, the shadows create the context, describe the lay of land, direction of sun and it's intensity, the shape of the objects. I give the shadows their own color, because they are so important to the overall scene."
