My lathe-turned and carved wood vessels focus on function or implied function and explore both the organic and graphic qualities of the wood through various woodworking techniques. I strive for continuity, historical context and a high level of workmanship as I make my bowls, jars, vases and vessels.
As a full-time studio artist, I bring to my work a lifetime of study in art forms that range from improvisational music to the visual arts, especially photography, sculpture and film. I studied at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; and hold a BS degree in Fine and Applied Arts from the University of Oregon, Eugene.
Since 2000, Bob Carls and his wife, Amy Sharpe, have owned and operated Ripple River Gallery near Bay Lake, MN, which represents about 50 regional artisans.
Turned wood vessels by Bob Carls have earned numerous awards and can be found in private and corporate collections worldwide and in the permanent collections of the Minnesota State Historical Society, St. Paul.
